Visiting Artists' Studios

Our home gallery and studios have been a part of the art tours for over a year now. Below is an article about these fascinating visits that I wrote for the local paper.

"As an artist, San Miguel de Allende called to me 14 years ago. Even then this magical town was a center of cultural activities and artists. The first night I arrived in my new home, I went to an art opening and someone told me, after discovering I was a painter, “You are in the right place!”  I have never doubted that.

San Miguel has become one of the most popular and celebrated art towns in all of Mexico with hundreds of working artists. Art is the spirit of the town.

This colonial jewel has been a destination for artists since the 1940’s and now it continues to be a magical magnet for artists, galleries and art lovers. Constantly evolving and increasingly sophisticated, it is a center of creativity and inspiration in all forms.

Inspiration is everywhere.

A strong and constantly evolving community of creative types is welcomed. You will find a haven for artists and aficionados from around the world.

San Miguel has developed into probably the most popular and the most famous of all art towns in Mexico with a growing list of art galleries and artists’ studios.

One of the best ways to understand the art community is to meet the artists personally. It isn’t always easy to gain access into a working artist’s studio. We work in solitude and aren’t always open to inviting visitors into our workspaces. Arturo

For my part, I enjoy the tours because I get to meet people that I otherwise would not. My show is up

My part of the show is hung. The gallery is wonderful. Right in the center of town. It is very old, and I find it charming. We had crowds of people in the gallery yesterday, I think people like to see a work in progress. One young Mexican woman found price errors on a couple of tags. I did not have enough zeros for the peso exchange. The dollar is so high right now that the peso price looks huge.

Cynthia has many small pieces for her room. She had 2 men working most of the day yesterday getting nails into the ancient walls; so today she can hang her work.

Last night's salon

This slide is the first abstract painting I made in art school in 1953

My friend,  fellow artist, and retired gallerista, Joaquin Piñeiro hosted his first monthly salon and I was the guest speaker. I talked about my 60 year journey as an artist  accompanied by a slide presentation. It was certainly a trip down memory lane for me, and hopefully the audience gained an insight to an artist life and motivation.

Joaquin opens his studio for these events and has lined up a fascinating group of presenters.
San Miguel has countless fascinating people artists writers musicians and story tellers. These salons will allow the public to meet some of these creative people free of charge. The space is limited, so reservations are a must.

Almost ready to get back in the studio

I am catching up with all the work on the computer that I need to do before I get back into the studio. Perhaps, I am avoiding starting a new series, because I know how hard it is to get into the creative zone that will inspire and guide me to make new work.

I updated my website and just finished editing my article for the Encaustic Art Institutes's winter edition of their online magazine. I felt honored to be asked to contribute. When it is published, I will share it with you.

I added 10 images of my work to the article and it was interesting to peruse some older work. Here are some of my favorites.
