August 16 & 17 workshop

We just finished an introductory workshop that was fun for everyone. I really enjoyed meeting and working with five artists that I hadn't met before. It was such a compatible group that we are planning on getting together for dinner. Judith invited us to her home as soon as schedules clear. And four of these wonderful artists signed up for the advanced workshop August 26 & 27.

I had private students last week. They got my full attention. It was fun.

My life has been interrupted by the paper work and legalities caused by my car accident, but I did make time to get into the studio last week and create 6 new gems.

Interrupted workshop

My Monday and Tuesday workshop was interrupted by an urgent request for me to go to the minister of something or others' office to file a complaint against the owner of the truck that had lost its brakes and hit my car, with me in it, on Saturday. I am lucky to be alive!

Being in Mexico, every legal form is pages long, must have three copies and takes hours to process... so I didn't get back to the studio for 4 hours and the understanding participants returned. We made up the missed hours the next day.

July workshops

The temperatures will be cooler in July and I am ready to have more workshops.

Mondays and Tuesdays the introductory workshops give you all the information on making your own encaustic art. We will cover the basics of making and using the paint and heat sources. Demonstrations include: tools and techniques for fusing, layering and scraping/scribing, building up of texture, line and edge and collage.and more.

All you need to begin is enthusiasm, a willingness to play, experiment and let the process take you on an adventure.

The cost is $200 usd plus $25 materials fee, or the peso equivalent for each two day workshop. I provide all the materials and you can leave the workshop with four finished paintings and perhaps the excitement to continue to the advanced techniques workshop on Thursday and Friday.

The last two days, a Thursday and Friday ( we take Wednesday off ) we explore some advanced techniques and will focus on surfacing, embedding, transparencies, glazing and incising.

You can experiment with assemblage, casting, carving, and working 3-Dimensionally, monotype, image transfer, combining oil and encaustic and dipping. You will have another four finished paintings after the workshop.

It is necessary to have some experience in encaustic to utilize this advanced workshop.

Back in the studio

I've been in the new apartment three weeks now and it is starting to feel like home, especially since I have been working in the studio. There is still more to do, have made, and fix up, but when I am painting, I forget about everything else.

It's the hottest time of the year in San Miguel, so I take advantage of the cool mornings to heat up the encaustic paint and get the torch going.

I think I have finished the painting for the group show, "My Mexico". I'll work on something else for a while and then decide if it is finished.

P.S. I decided that painting was finished and made another one. The largest I have attempted in encaustic; 35" x 47". Since I love painting the figure, I thought I could incorporate a figure into an abstract.
